Our University Team

The Sustainability Almanac is a publication of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s Office of Campus and Community Sustainability, Its creator is Nathan Byrnes, and its Editor-in-Chief is Daniel Schemer

Our Sources

Contents are gathered from popular and professional online sources such as the New York Times, Science Daily, The Huffington Post, National Geographic, National Public Radio, The London Times, Mother Nature Network, and many others that turn up in our extensive searches for the most relevant and essential news of the week.

News Ethic

We choose our global, national and local articles according to their importance and timeliness, with a focus on stories that inspire knowledge-based positive action. There is much bleak news related to the challenges of sustainability, but the Sustainability Almanac believes that action grows from conviction that effective change is possible and necessary.

A Customized Version for You

While the Sustainability Almanac is currently designed to provide its local news and events for the South Coast region of Massachusetts, our team is available by contract to customize a Sustainability Almanac for other communities with research relevant to your area. Please inquire by contacting the Susan Jennings, Director of the Office of Campus and Community Sustainability at sjennings@umassd.edu or 508-910-6484.

Questions for the Editor can be directed to Daniel Schemer at u_dschemer@umassd.edu, Pamela Marean at pmarean@umassd.edu, or 508-951-3808. We welcome your comments and suggestions.

  1. Tom Seiter says:

There’s a new model for sustainable business celebrating its Grand Opening this weekend in Swansea, MA. The Ice Cream Barn at Baker Farm is having a ribbon-cutting ceremony this saturday (October 6th) at 11 A.M. followed by an antique car show from 1 P.M.- 4 P.M. On sunday, Cat Country 98.1 is broadcasting live from 2 P.M.- 4 P.M. with lots of free prizes. And on Monday there will be an antique tractor parade and show starting at noon.

We focus on using ingredients grown locally, including ingredients like dairy, mint, maple syrup, berries, and other delicious flavorings for our ice cream. Next year, we will begin pasteurizing the dairy from our own farm to make into ice cream.

"We have forgotten how to be good guests, how to walk lightly on the earth as its other creatures do."

Urban Air Billboard Garden
To artist Stephen Glassman, billboards are a canvas, and a potential tool for confronting pollution challenges as cities grow. To understand how it'll look, picture a simple billboard, but instead of an advertisement, imagine tall stalks of bamboo and other native plants that gobble up carbon dioxide and create a tiny, cool microclimate.
